Jay Banner was born and raised in New York City. He attended the University of Pennsylvania for his Bachelor’s degree, and pursued graduate studies for his MS and Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology and Louisiana State University, and joined the faculty at the UT-Austin in 1990. He is presently the F. M. Bullard Professor in the Jackson School of Geosciences and Director of the Environmental Science Institute at UT-Austin. Banner’s research investigates the impacts of urbanization on aquifers and streams, and the reconstruction of past climate change, soil erosion and ocean chemistry. Jay lives in Austin with his wife Liz and their dogs Dexter and Lucy, and he is an ultimate Frisbee enthusiast.
This Thursday, Jay will share the story of his rocky search for his passion in “Fear and Loathing, and then Redemption, of Chemistry.”
